E-learning

User manuals can only go so far. If you want to demonstrate the topic to your employee as well as test and track their understanding of the topic, you’ll need e-learning.

E-learning refers to training that is delivered through digital devices, like computers, tablets, and phones. It walks the trainee through the topic using slides, animations, voiceover, and quizzes.

Pros

  • Availability and flexibility. There’s no need to wait until a trainer is free; the trainee can complete the training at any time and often from anywhere.
  • Active learning. Courses can demonstrate real-life situations and provide engaging, fast-paced information which requires the trainee to participate in activities that are all part of the learning process.
  • Support for various learning preferences. Different people learn in different ways. Visual learners benefit from the slides, auditory learners benefit from the voiceover, and kinaesthetic learners benefit from the interactive features of the course.
  • Tracking trainee’s knowledge. With a Learning Management System (LMS) it’s possible to track a trainee’s participation and score rating from quizzes so you can prove that your trainee has participated in and completed the required training.

Cons

  • Price. The cost of creating e-learning can be greater than a user manual or having a fellow employee demonstrate the information. But as your business scales up in employee numbers and requires tracking trainee participation and pass rates, e-learning will save time and resources.
  • Practical training may still be needed. In some cases, sitting in front of a computer and covering the topic is only part of the training process. You may still need to provide further practical training to ensure the trainee is ready to complete the required tasks. But e-learning is still a great way to pass on certain types of knowledge.
